Register for hands-on sessions, displays, presentations, food, fun and music at one of Hillsborough County's secret jewels- the Camp Bayou Outdoor Learning Center.

On Saturday, November 12, there will be a dozen sessions starting at 9am, with something of interest to everyone venturing into the outdoors and suitable for folks from pre-k through adult.

Choose from a variety of sessions, most geared specially for families. Saturday's morning sessions include:
- Join Peggy Morgan from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to look for indicators on a healthy river during 'Macroinvertebrate Mania';
- There's more to ants and palmetto than fire when you talk with Dr. George and Ms. Jeri on the Scrub Walk;
- Ms. Sandy and Ms. Jane will show families how to tie a knot, cast a fishing line and more before trying your luck at catching a fish on the river;
plus other sessions before lunch.

After lunch, there's more educational fun:

- Find out how to create a Wildlife Garden for Birds and Butterflies with Tom Heitzman from Sweet Bay Nursery; or
- Listen as Professor O'Dell from Hillsborough Commuity College- Brandon discusses the issue of Noise Pollution;
- Learn about Migratory Birds with Melanie Higgins from Quest Ecology;
- How does the study of phenology relate to climate? Come to the session with George Kish from USGS to find the answer;

Other sessions include workshops to make outdoor equipment such as a fossil sifter with Fred Hendershot of the Paleo Preserve Fossil Museum (useful for Sunday's field trip) or a bamboo cane fishing pole with Ms. Dolly of the Nature Center (complete with casting instructions!).

Between sessions, there is time to try a variety of activities geared for enjoying the outdoors in Florida.

During the afternoon social mixer, browse the photo contest winners, West-Central LEEF's EE lesson plan contest entries, or the poster session of HCC- South Shore students in Dr. Holland's Environmental Studies class and more, while listening to the musical magic of Ruskin's own Mitch Traphagen.

After a hearty dinner, settle in to hear our keynote speaker, Rob Heath, who has done much for Florida habitats in general and Tampa Bay's public lands in particular.

Stick around to end the evening with conversation and a-make-you-own sundae. Get a good night's sleep- tomorrow there are 4 field trips to choose from- something for everyone!

The complete schedule for the weekend, Friday, November 11 through Sunday, November 13, and registration form are available on the blog:http://anaturaleducation.blogspot.com/. A Natural Education Weekend

The Camp Bayou 'A Natural Education Weekend' is just weeks away with lots of family fun and Florida outdoors information waiting for registered participants.

On Friday, November 11, look forward to either a 'Camping 101' experience or an immersion in 'Arts and Nature'.

Folks who have little to no camping experience but would like to learn, will find a wealth of information and hands-on opportunities throughout the afternoon and evening hours. Friday Camping 101 sessions include:

- Leave No Trace with Jeanene Arrington of Not a Clue Adventures. Find out how to explore the outdoors responsibly in this introduction to this outdoor ethic- Camp Cooking with Lynn Kessel, food columnist at South Shore News. Learn a few basic outdoor cooking methods, tips and recipes that will guide you to better outdoor eating.

- Lost and Found in the Outdoors with Daniel Allen, Florida Master Naturalist Graduate and father of two small children will talk about best practices when enjoying the outdoors with kids.

- Tenting Basics with local Ruskin Boy Scout troop. Learn how to put up a tent and get camping tips from a kid's point of view!

- Camp- Style dinner, evening speaker and night hike with s'mores around the campfire completes the day.

For 10 lucky 'Clueless Campers' (families who have little to no experience with tent camping), the adventure continues overnight with special mentored camping. See event blog and registration for more details and restrictions.

An alternate Friday thread is offered focusing on Art in Nature. Two hour sessions include:

- Creative Writing Workshop with Dr. Diane Alvarez. Create a family poem or poems to remember your Camp Bayou experience! Master Naturalists will help you learn the names of plants on a guided walk with paper and pencil to capture images
- Artistic Reflections with Bruce Fallender. Bring your watercolors, oil paints, charcoal or other mediums, or just sketch on the pads provided to capture a bit of Camp Bayou beauty through a spontaneous creation.

The complete schedule for the weekend, Friday, November 11 through Sunday, November 13, and registration form are available on the blog:http://anaturaleducation.blogspot.com/.
Take a tour around the South Shore campus of Hillsborough Community College in Ruskin on Sunday, November 13 from 10am-noon. The $10 trip fee will be split between Camp Bayou and the scholarship fund at HCC- South Shore.

The US Green Building Council has honored the SouthShore Campus with “LEED Gold” certification. This the first time that a full college campus in Florida has received LEED Certification. The unique campus has also received honors from the American Institute of Architects (Tampa Bay), the Leroy Collins Center and the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties (NAIOP Tampa Bay) for its innovative “Green” architecture. Among the innovations used on the campus are: storm water recycling, under floor HVAC, recycled materials, bio-filtration, dual sensor lighting and a unique geographical alignment. During weekdays, nearly 4,000 persons work and study on the campus. Yet, the unique design gives each person a sense of connection with the external environment. Hillsborough Community College has committed that all future buildings on this site will meet or exceed LEED “Green Building” Standards.
